One man, age 47, is dead after a Lakewood Police officer shot and killed him during an incident at a Lakewood duplex.
Lakewood Police were called to the duplex in the afternoon of Dec. 19 at the 2400 block of Youngfield Street on reports of Jason Elliot Waterhouse disturbing and destroying property inside the home, according to a release from Lakewood Police. The release reads that officers attempted to contact Waterhouse for several hours, but he refused to leave the home. At around 5:20 p.m., officers reported seeing fire and smoke coming from inside the home.
Officers then went inside the home and confronted Waterhouse, who was armed with an unknown weapon, according to John Romero, a spokesperson for Lakewood Police. Waterhouse allegedly attacked officers when they entered, the release says. Lakewood Police tried to use “less lethal weapons” on Waterhouse, but they didn't work. An officer then shot Waterhouse. He was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The release says 10 Lakewood Police officers were treated for smoke inhalation due to the fire.
An investigation, involving Lakewood Police, West Metro Fire Rescue and the Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team, is underway. The officer who shot Waterhouse was placed on administration leave, per policy, following an investigation over the use of lethal force.
