A 34-year-old man was hit and killed by an RTD light rail train in Golden on Friday, Dec. 20, according to the Golden Police Department.

The incident occurred at about 8 p.m. on the W-line light rail tracks near Ulysses Street, where witnesses told police they saw a man walking westbound on the light rail tracks. The man was hit by an eastbound train. According to a Golden Police press release, the train driver saw the man, blasted the horn and braked but was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting him.

Golden Police later identified the man who was hit by the train as John Aaron Reed. According to a release issued on December 23, Reed's family lives in Newport News, Virginia. Reed's father told Golden Police that Reed was homeless and his family was unaware he was in Colorado. Reed's father also said he had last spoken to his son in October.

An autopsy showed that Reed died as a result of injuries sustained from the impact of the train. The Dec. 23 release also stated police were still awaiting the results of the toxicology report. However, police say there were no obvious signs of drug or alcohol impairment nor obvious signs of suicide.

The release also said police were working to go through video footage in order to get a better understanding of the incident.
