Got Saturday night plans? Roller derby heats up Overland

It's been a chilly February, so it's time to escape the cold and come check out the exciting sport of roller derby.

Denver Roller Derby, whose all-star team was recently ranked #3 in the world, plays its February doubleheader on Saturday, February the 16th. Doors open at 5:30pm, with the first game starting at 6pm.

Roller derby can be a bit of a bit of a mystery if you've never experienced a game, but it has been rapidly gaining popularity as a fast-paced, family-friendly, and full-contact sport.

A game, or bout as it's called, is played in two 30-minute periods, and each round of play is called a "jam." Jammers, denoted by a star on their helmet, score points by passing blockers, whose aim is to stop the jammers. Blockers must simultaneously be playing offense, working to help their own jammer get through the pack of skaters.

On Saturday night, four teams will square off in two bouts: Bad Apples vs. Green Barrettes followed by Orange Crushers vs. Shotgun Betties.

Tickets are $20, sold at the door or at our website, https://denverrollerderby.org. Kids 12 and under get in for free. Beer from neighboring Declaration Brewing will be available for purchase to adults 21 and up, as well as food from the PB&R food truck. Street parking is plentiful. After party to follow.

So what are you waiting for? Grab your friends and family this Saturday and come check out Denver Roller Derby at our new home, 2375 South Delaware St..
