Jeffco students rally to vote, remember

The rally will be 6 p.m. Thursday, April 19

Jefferson County students are determined to bring change and are aiming to do so through events that gather the community.

The student-created and led organization Jeffco Students United for Action is committed to ending gun violence in the community.

In March, the organization worked on the Jeffco Never Again rally held at the Jeffco North Area Athletic Complex, which drew hundreds from the community — students, teachers and parents alike.

Many of those students when went on to march March 24 at the Denver and Washington D.C. March for Our Lives.

Now, the students are taking action again with an event planned for Thursday, April 19 — Vote for Our Lives. The event will be focused on getting students registered to vote.

“This is really important for me because I’ve grown up around gun violence my whole life,” said Golden High School senior and event organizer Kaylee Coffman. “My earliest memory of public school is a lockdown drill in kindergarten. Watching it continue and seeing no action has affected my confidence in our system and I really want to bring that faith back.”

By holding the event the evening before the 19th anniversary of the deadly shooting at Columbine High School, students hope that it will also be a place where the community can commemorate and remember the victims of the 1999 shooting.

The event will be held 5:30 p.m. April 19 at Clement Park Amphitheater.
