Glass: `Jeffco Public Schools is open to and welcomes all families'

On Sept. 5, the Trump Administration announced its plans to end the DACA program (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). Accordingly, the Department of Homeland Security will stop processing any new applications for the program and action is required by Congress by March 5, 2018 or DACA recipients will begin losing their status in the United States.

Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jason Glass distributed a letter this week to principals assuring Jeffco families that “Jeffco Public Schools is open to and welcomes all families in our community.”

In accordance with federal law, Jeffco Schools does not ask about the legal status of students as the obligation and moral purpose is to serve all children.

“At this point, we will see what proposals actually emerge from Congress on the future of the DACA program,” Glass writes in his letter. “However, we are concerned about and monitoring any federal action which might limit the opportunities of children and youth in our community.”

Glass continued saying that Jeffco Public School policy remains the unchanged and “all students are welcome and no proof of legal status is required to attend our schools.”

As a further commitment to its students, Jeffco Schools Board of Education passed a resolution at its Sept. 7 board meeting reaffirming a welcoming environment for students and families in all schools and at all school functions.

"We are committed to providing a safe learning and work environment where all members of the school community are treated with dignity and respect," the resolution reads.

Board member Amanda Stevens spoke about the resolution saying, "the dignity and dreams of all our students are worthy of our protection. I'm very proud to reaffirm with this resolution that Jeffco remains committed to being and will continue to work to realize a safe and welcoming environment for all students."
